Winter Driving Tips

To cover winter driving from all angles, Popular Mechanics consulted with three winter driving experts; world record holder and stunt driver Tanner Foust gave valuable insight into winter racing. Alex Debogorski, of the TV show Ice Road Truckers, shared his insightful knowledge after more than 40 years of winter hauling. And to get a perspective from someone who tunes the chassis' of Chrysler's most potent machines, they spoke with Erich Heuschele, manager of SRT vehicle dynamics and 20-year ice racing veteran. With their collective winter wisdom, we’ve put together helpful tips that will ensure safe winter travels no matter what vehicle you drive.

Follow these winter driving tips to stay safe on the roads this season!

Make sure your car is prepared for winter by having it winterized if necessary and checking the tires, brakes, and windshield wipers.

Always keep an emergency winter driving kit available in your car in case of a winter weather related breakdown or accident.

Drive slower than you normally do as winter roads will be icy and slick, making braking times longer.

Increase distance from other drivers to allow more time to react to any winter hazards.

Pay attention to winter weather alerts and road conditions before going out on winter roads.

Be aware of your surroundings and read the terrain.

Finally, never use cruise control in winter weather. Cruise control won’t slow down your car if you hit a patch of ice or snow and this can lead to an accident.

If you drive a car, truck or SUV with a "snow" mode, activate it for winter driving. This will help to limit wheelspin and provide tuning for the throttle mapping, all-wheel drive system, traction control system, ABS system, stability control system and more.

Finally, always be aware of winter animals that may appear unexpectedly in the middle of winter roads.

By following these winter driving tips, you can navigate winter roads with confidence and remain safe during winter travels. Happy winter driving!
